8. Climate maps

Data on air temperature, humidity, wind speed and frequency of wind direction was recorded between 1 May 1988 and 30 April 1989 within a one-year ground measurement programme carried out by the German Meteorological Service at 12 temporary measuring stations within the area under investigation. Information from another nine permanent measuring stations of the German Meteorological Service, representing the regional climatic conditions as open field stations, was available within the area under investigation or its surroundings.

The 12 temporary measuring stations were established in areas of different use, e.g. clearings, built-up areas and open land, as well as at different altitudes and special topographic situations, e.g. valleys, hillsides and high-altitude areas. The German Meteorological Service transformed the data into subject-related climate maps through model calculations and statistical evaluations and in connection with a digital surface model and a current climatically relevant land-use map, as illustrated below.

The data recorded at the open field stations was used to determine the altitude distribution of climate data from relatively unaffected areas and to transfer it to the whole area under investigation with the help of the digital surface model. What is to be considered in the context of such a general distribution of climatic parameters, however, is a modification by local influences like valley, city and forest effects. The recorded average deviation of local influences from the general altitude-related distribution situation, on the other hand, was considered in the climate maps through the use of land-use maps.

A selection of these climate maps for the subjects temperature and wind is presented on the following pages.
