Stuttgart's solar educational trail

A solar educational trail was established by the city of Stuttgart under the control of the Office for Environmental Protection. It starts near the Ferdinand-Porsche-Gymnasium secondary school and ends at the weather central on Scharrenberg. 15 boards along the trail provide a lot of information around the sun.

The subjects that are treated range from global climate to energy supply and possibilities of renewable energy production as well as historico-cultural and physical topics. One board provides data on the sun for the region of Stuttgart. Another board treats the recently established photovoltaic plant at Ferdinand-Porsche-Gymnasium. A sundial is installed at the end of the educational trail on Schnarrenberg.

The solar educational trail is appropriate as both a tourist attraction and a destination of educational excursions for all class levels. Depending on your walking speed and the time you spend at each board, the trail takes between 90 minutes and two hours and offers an exciting walk for families and everyone else who is interested.

You can easily reach Stuttgart's solar educational trail by means of public transport. It begins at the underground stop Fürfelder Straße next to Ferdinand-Porsche-Gymnasium (if you take the U5 from Stadtmitte towards Freiberg) and ends at the weather central on Schnarrenberg. From there you can return with bus number 52 towards Bad Cannstatt/Wilhelmsplatz or towards Zuffenhausen/Neuwirtshaus after a short walk along the road Am Schnarrenberg. You can also walk to the tram stop Elbestraße (underground line U14) through the Tapachtal valley and to Max-Eyth-See lake.

The topics of most boards were assembled by ViaSol in Rheinstetten. The information on the photovoltaic plant at Ferdinand-Porsche-Gymnasium was provided by the school club for school and environment. All data on the sun around Stuttgart was collected by the Office for Environmental Protection. The garden and cemeteries department established the educational trail and provided the sundial. The Landesbank Baden-Württemberg: Natur und Umwelt foundation (a foundation of the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg supporting the conservation of the environment and nature) has backed the solar educational trail financially.
