May



May is the first out of four months with more than 200 hours of sunshine. The position of the sun is already very high and the first hot days occur. This leads to both an increase in the average ozone concentration to up to more than 70 ug/m³ (Böblingen) and higher peak values reaching the critical value of 180 ug/m³ or even more.

The heating activity has decreased to an extent that the average ambient air concentration of sulphur dioxide drops to less than 10 µg/m³ at all measuring stations. This very low concentration moves around the limit of detection.

In May, a polar area with increasing pressure moves southwards and shifts the centre of high pressure from Asia to the Atlantic. Apart from September, May is the only month with a belt of high pressure that stretches from the West to the East of Central Europe and mostly brings fine weather.

May is the last month before autumn in which temperature can drop below the freezing level. The last frost day in Stuttgart's centre is 11 May, 20 May in the higher district of Hohenheim. The "ice saints" (12 to 15 May) are famous for their late frosts, which can damage the flowers already abloom.
