3. The regional climate and air situation
The regional air situation

Information on the large-scale ambient air concentration of pollutants is provided by an analysis programme carried out by the Landesanstalt für Umweltschutz (Regional Office for Environmental Protection, 1988) in Baden-Württemberg for the years 1983 to 1986. Samples were taken in forested areas in Baden-Württemberg. The components sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen monoxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) were measured with highly sensitive measurement devices.

Appropriate properties for the average and short-term pollution can be deduced through statistical methods from the 130 samples taken at each of the 17 measurement locations. The result was that the properties clearly depend on the altitude and as for SO2 also on the orographic structure. The relations were used for the construction of immission maps on the scale of 5 km by 5 km covering the whole region. Towns and cities were omitted, however, and therefore no local fine structure can be determined.
