Average monthly and annual values in Stuttgart


August



Similar to July, the ambient air concentrations of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen monoxide and carbon monoxide reach a minimum level in August thanks to the mixing of the air in the ground layer.

As a result of the strong insolation in August, the ozone values are as high as in July and the critical level of 180 µg/m³ is exceeded frequently. Maximum 30-minute averages can even reach 250 µg/m³ in Greater Stuttgart.

The highest ozone concentration is measured on the periphery of big urban centres, not in the inner city. High concentrations are even recorded in the mountain ranges of the Black Forest. This shows that ozone is a large-scale problem for air hygiene.

August is the last summer month. There are early autumn storms around the North Sea region almost every year. The average temperature in August is about 33.3 °F (0.7 °C) lower than that of July. Absolute maximum temperatures of up to 96.6 °F (35.9 °C) show that August is still a very hot month. The number of the summer days is high: an average of 10 days in the inner city and about 8 days in the higher Filder plains.

August is the month with the second biggest amount of precipitation (84 mm on average) in Stuttgart, after June. The position of the sun is still very high and this leads to a high amount of monthly sunshine hours (211 hours). Nevertheless, August marks the ending of four consecutive months with more than 200 hours of sunshine.

Weather lore:

- All the tears that St. Swithin (15 July) can cry, St. Bartlemy's (24 August) mantle wipes them dry.

- Dry August and warm, doth harvest no harm.
